Scott Aukerman about Hamm

After having Jon Hamm on your show, is it weird to watch Mad Men?
- weirdly, i know jon really well, and i see NONE of him in Don Draper. He's such an amazing actor.

Guests that have embraced the show’s silliness include Ben Stiller and Amy Poehler, Simon Pegg and Sarah Silverman. Plus there are a large bunch of regular contributors who take on the character roles, including Jon Gabrus and Paul F Tompkins, both of whom will be part of the UK shows. Aukerman says that it’s often the non-comedian guests who shine the most. “Jon Hamm has been on it since the beginning,” he explains, “which was right when Mad Men started. He’s one of the best guests, he’ll jump right into it. I love it when the people you wouldn’t expect to do so well really take to the format.”
The Hollywood Reporter: You have a long list of celebrities guest-starring this season. Was it easier to book so many big names in your second season?
Scott Aukerman: The first season, I really relied on my friends and people in comedy that I had worked with over the years. So I kind of made these favor calls in a way; I would call up Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd and ask them to be on a TV show they had never seen that may or may not be good. I've also known Jon Hamm a really long time, and he was like, "Yep, no problem." The first year, it really was a lot of that -- me just relying on the kindness of my friends.

What is your favorite “Between Two Ferns” episode?
-  When we first started, we were just doing them with friends – Michael Cera, Jimmy Kimmel, Jon Hamm. Those were a lot of fun, because it was just us messing around with pals, trying to come up with fun stuff. Not a lot of pressure.

You started Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis years ago, and now you just did one with the President. Where can you go next?
- We never had any plans when it came to Between Two Ferns. We did the Michael Cera one as a gag in a pilot that I was pitching. Then, we got asked to do a second one by Jimmy Kimmel, and to be honest, we hadn't considered ever doing one again but we said, "Alright, one more then we're done." Then, Jon Hamm asked to do one, and we weren't going to say no to Don Draper. That one we had a lot of fun with. Zach and I decided that we could have a good time doing more of them when the time was right. Each time we do one we expect it's going to be the last. After we did the Christmas one, we had a conversation about that being the last.

Hamm :
… Scott Aukerman or Zach or somebody came up to me and asked if I wanted to do “Between Two Ferns,” and I said, “Absolutely.”
“I think having a big name in the main guest spot serves two functions,” Aukerman said. “One, it’s great for advertising the show. People get to wondering what Jon Hamm is going to do on the show. It’s the same reason 'Saturday Night Live' has a different celebrity guest host every week, where people are wondering what Alec Baldwin or Charles Barkley is going to do
Hi Scott, huge fan of the show......did Jon Hamm really blindside you with the Reggie comments on 12 guests of Christmas? And if so, were you pissed? I genuinely felt really bad for you getting sort of cornered on stage and for what it's worth, I'm super sorry that happened!

-  didn't care - the weirdest thing about it was, he didn't even know if the reggie thing had been announced yet. that's insane to me, that he would say that without knowing that.

Comedy Bang! Bang! host Scott Aukerman.
"He was just this goofy dude with a funny sense of humor who kept being on these failed TV shows. "The surprise to me was how good of a dramatic actor he was. The guy I recognize personally is the Jon Hamm of Bridesmaids and SNL. The guy I don’t recognize is Don Draper."
