Zach Galifianakis on His Buddy Jon Hamm

..... we predict the success or failure of every movie to be released in October (or at least, every movie we had something to say about) based solely on watching the trailers
Zach Galifianakis and Isla Fisher (your typical schlubby guy/hot chick comedy pairing) are a suburban couple who discover that their neighbors (Don Draper, Wonder Woman) are really secret government agents.
Predictions:
Julie: WARNING: The trailer will spoil this entire movie plot from start to finish in under three minutes, thereby saving you $13.00. Don Draper, you are responsible for creating the most famous Coke commercial and jingle of all time. I expected better from you than this. BOMB!

Thomas R: Action-comedies are really hard to pull off, especially if the mix you’re going for is “Judd Apatow sitcom meets Mr. & Mrs. Smith”. The trailer didn’t get so much as a lip twitch out of me, and I doubt the movie will fare much better. BOMB.

Susan: Wasn’t this movie already made? I believe it was called Date Night. Or maybe it was Knight and Day? No, wasn’t it Killers? Either way, it didn’t do well when it was a single guy and a single gal. How does doubling the numbers make a difference? BOMB.

Thomas S: Wow, I am so glad the studio was kind enough to tell me the plot of the entire movie in that trailer, saving me two hours of my life. Probably a HIT regardless.
Rob: Think of The ‘Burbs, only with the couple discovering their new neighbors are not murderous wackos, but secret agents. The trailer doesn’t provide too many laughs, so we’ll see. HIT.

Joel: They keep making spy spoofs, but those haven’t been megahit material since Austin Powers. And it looks too soft for action and raunchy comedy fans, but not soft enough for those whose tastes are for milder sitcom or rom-com humor. BOMB

actress Abigail Spencer
there’s one actor Spencer hopes to work with soon: Jon Hamm!
I would love to work in a different era, because we were doing a period drama in the early 1960s. I’d love to do a comedy with him. I just think it’d be fun for us to do something totally different than that,”
According to Spencer, Hamm was known for reenacting an SNL skit around the set.
“He would just pull them out,” Spencer said. “Like, you know Maya Rudolph’s ‘Tiny Moves?’ He would just pull them out.”
Ironically, Spencer had no idea who Hamm was when she initially started working with him.
“I hadn’t watch the show when I was cast on the show, so I didn’t have a lot of background knowledge on who he was,” she said. “I was like ‘Who is this Jon Hamm guy that knows all the SNL skits?’ ”

The program says Gil and George’s understudies are Jon Hamm and John Slattery. Will they be there opening night?
JOHN MULANEY: Well, understudies don’t normally get invited to openings.
NICK KROLL: But Hamm, sure, if he can buy a ticket.
JM: Also, George and Gil may bail on opening night because it’s too Hollywood.
NK: It’s a Monday, which they were told is when they’re supposed to be dark.

"It's very smart — they clearly chose us for a reason! Those boys aren't getting any younger, so you never know if there's gonna be a fall backstage," Hamm joked to The Hollywood Reporter at the opening-night performance at the Lyceum Theatre on Monday. "John and Nick are good friends of both John and I, so it's a fun meta moment we were able to put into the show with them."
.....
Hamm and Slattery were each responsible for compiling their own biographies for the show’s program, but amusingly, what's printed flatters Kroll's understudy, Slattery, much more than Mulaney's backup, Hamm.
......
Kroll, as Gil Faizon, announced Hamm's presence when he walked down into the audience during the performance, in which Alan Alda was a featured guest. "The understudy showed up to the show,” Kroll told Hamm. “What, nothing better to do, bro?"

Interview in Mr Porter

What’s Next For Mr Jon Hamm?

It’s another sunny day in LA. Seeing as I was coming to meet the man who has done more to raise male sartorial standards than just about any other living person – did anyone wear a pocket square pre-Mad Men? – I’ve decided to sport a nice linen jacket and tassel loafers. But Mr Jon Hamm is dressed down in an NHL cap, a red, white and blue checked shirt, dark jeans and Converse, plus a couple of days of stubble. “Jesus, you look so smart,” he says. “I look like a suburban dad who’s got lost on the way to school.”
......
Mr Hamm is not only one of the most likeable stars in Hollywood – he says he owes his career breaks mainly to being “nice”, respectful of people’s time, listening, preparing – he’s also a damn fine actor, belatedly honoured with an Emmy for that final season.....

There’s a certain Midwestern modesty to him. He makes clear that his relationship is not up for discussion (“It’s very personal and specific and I think people tend to draw their own conclusions about that anyway”), but the implication is that he’s single. However, he’s upfront about almost everything else right up to the moment he has to leave for his weekly therapy session. “I find it very helpful,” he says. “I know the English are a lot more sceptical about it than Americans are, but maybe after Brexit, you’ll change your minds.”
....
As for rehab? “It has all these connotations, but it’s just an extended period of talking about yourself. People go for all sorts of reasons, not all of which are chemically related. But there’s something to be said for pulling yourself out of the grind for a period of time and concentrating on recalibrating the system. And it works. It’s great.”
....
This year, he’s spending Christmas at his aunt’s on the Californian coast, most likely, but can’t think of a thing he wants for Christmas. “Having come from a fractured family, holidays were always a little catch-as-catch-can.” He lives in Los Feliz, as he has done since he moved to LA, and can often be seen at his local Italian deli, Little Dom’s. Is settling down, having kids on the agenda at all? “I don’t know. I don’t think it’s necessarily an imperative. I’m not going to psychoanalyse myself here, but… well, never say never. I’ve got nieces and nephews and I’ve been a teacher. I’ve probably been around kids a lot more than all my friends. I feel if you shut that off entirely you calcify. You turn into that guy.”
.....
He means the guy who complains about what the kids are up to these days, though he does express a certain bafflement at social media. “I speak to young kids starting out and they can’t even get into an audition unless they have a certain number of followers on Instagram. Of course, it doesn’t mean anything – you can go out and buy 100,000 followers. But it becomes meaningful if business decides it’s meaningful. In time there will be a correction and we will look back on this period and say, ‘Wow. We were really dumb.’”
......
It’s not something that he’s taken on – “I’m not interested in fucking with people” – but he does credit Draper with improving his wardrobe. “I don’t share a lot of sartorial clues with Mr Draper, other than we’re the same suit size, but it did open my eyes to buying clothes that fit properly. I generally try and dress a little more appropriate to my age. It’s epidemic out here. So often I’m like, ‘What are you wearing? You have an Ed Hardy T-shirt and a wallet chain and biker boots and you’re 65 years old?’”
....
Mr Hamm “It has a good heart. There’s something about that I find appealing. I feel like comedies these days are so mean. If the punchline of the joke is ‘Fuck you!’ you’re bullying the laugh out. I feel like you can take your aunt to this.”

Still, I sense a frustration when it comes to more serious films. “From a features standpoint, it’s really difficult to get hard dramas made if you’re not Matt Damon, Christian Bale, Denzel Washington or Ben Affleck. That’s what those boys do and there are only so many slots. There are five or six leads who get the first look and if you’re lucky you might get a second. But hope springs eternal around this time of year. We’re done with the capes and tights and laser beams and we’re starting to see the serious movies that are up for awards.”
.....
he speaks intelligently on the recent unrest of the Black Lives Matter movement, and the anxiety creeping through the US. “Police violence is such a difficult thing to comprehend. If you sat me next to a black person who had also grown up in St Louis, simply by the nature of the colour of our skin, we’re going to have completely different experiences. It’s so difficult for people to grasp as it just rams up against our ideas of fairness and authority. The more and more shit that comes out like this, it’s harder and harder for people to dismiss.”

Circus Kid, Lorenzo Pisoni’s poignant documentary about his dad, Larry, and the Pickle Family Circus
The film boasts impressive show business credits, starting with executive producer, actor Daniel Radcliffe, and local singer/songwriter, Karen Lehner. Sarah Dusseault, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Westfeldt, Eden Wormfeld, William Rexer II, and Lorenzo are listed as producers. As the film’s promotional website explains, Westfeldt met Pisoni in 2013 when the two played opposite each other in The Explorers Club at Manhattan Theater Club. She was instantly captivated by his life story. “It was completely incongruous to me that this straight-laced, terrific actor who looks like Clark Kent grew up juggling, flying through the air, and tap-dancing in a gorilla suit! I couldn’t stop asking questions,” said Westfeldt.
Hamm and William Rexer were similarly taken with Pisoni’s family history. “Every kid wants to please his father.  Not every kid had to learn how to fall down a flight of stairs to do that,” Hamm said.

Hamm and  Gadot on playing iconic figures and dealing with dark side of fame and social media

writer Andy Bobrow
Den of Geek : Were there any other actors in consideration for Darryl other than Jon Hamm? He's really the perfect choice for that role, but what was the story there?

Andy Bobrow : I’ll start with the same disclaimer I gave when you asked about Will Ferrell last year: We were so lucky to get Jon, I don’t want to imply that we wanted anyone else more. But with celebrity cameos you have to cast a wide net. Some of the names I can remember were Barbra Streisand, Matthew McConaughey, Jenifer Aniston, Jack Nicholson, Melissa McCarthy, Tom Hanks, and Meryl Streep.
Jon Hamm was actually a name we batted around early in the process and dismissed it because we worried it would be too cutesy or too self-referential. Boy were we wrong. A few weeks after we dismissed it, and we had hit a few dead-ends, we reconsidered it and it started to feel like the coolest thing we could do. January texted him and got an immediate yes. We were so lucky to have him.
One fun fact: We wrote a line for January where she’s defending her actions and she says, “They were coming in here like mad men.” We shot that but cut it for time. Would have been gilding it a little too much anyway.

actress Jona Xiao
He’s very charming. He’s very outgoing. On set, he was the life of the party. At the same time, he’s very down to earth,” Xiao said, on working with actor Jon Hamm. “You knew when John was on set. He’d introduce himself to everyone. He was a dream to work with.”
Of course, there’s more to Hamm than his dashing good looks. Xiao added that she coached Hamm with some of his Mandarin lines in the film, admitting that she was really impressed.

 Elle interview
The 'Keeping Up With the Joneses' star on sex, love, and why getting older sucks
What would you do differently about losing your virginity?
Jon Hamm: I don't know. Everything? [Laughs] There's no version of it that's not awkward. Let's put it this way: As much as I had practiced, I was still not quite ready for game time.
Were you very young?
I wasn't. I was in college. I was 19.
That surprises me.
I don't know why that would surprise you. Maybe it's easy for some people. It certainly wasn't for me.
......
What did your dad teach you about women?
He was twice widowed. He was divorced from my mom when she died, but even so, there's a deep sense of tragedy in that. I never had the opportunity to, as an adult, sit down and talk to him about that. It's a real loss. I was quasi-adopted by my friends' families. And even today I get e-mails or cards from these women who, for lack of a better word, were my mom. We talk about what it means to be a family. Mostly it's about showing up. And being aware enough to check in and say, "How are you doing?" I've been incredibly lucky to have these people in my life.
.......
What do you wish you could tell your 20-year-old self?
I do think about that. The best thing you could say is: Appreciate it. Struggle is part of the journey. That's what I've learned in my forties: This too shall pass.
..........
What do you want to tell the next woman who dates you?
Oh God. I don't know. I don't think I'm ready to answer that yet.

.........
You and some friends have had a Tuesday night poker game for years. For ELLE's Women in Hollywood Issue, we'd like to turn the tables: Do you all talk about aging and how you look onscreen?
I mean...yeah. [Laughs] Sort of. The conversation is not dissimilar to what it's always been—a lot of bullshit, a lot of jokes, a lot of ridiculousness. But it's leavened now with discussions about career, family, kids. Getting old sucks. I had an interesting conversation with an older actor whom I've looked up to for many years. He said, "When I wake up in the morning, I still think I'm 35. It's not until I see myself in the mirror where I'm like, Oh, right..." I have that, too. That horrible realization that you're not what you used to be

The actor talks about putting Mad Men behind him, his comedic influences, and his new film, Keeping Up With the Joneses.
Three times during our phone conversation, Jon Hamm apologized for munching on an apple. He hadn't eaten anything all morning and was, as he described, "famished," only realizing halfway through the interview that his munching might be rude to the person on the other end of the line (it was not). "An apple a day keeps the doctor away," he later said, saving face in a humorous voice and putting a comic twist on an unnecessary apology......
.......
Was George Carlin one of your earliest influences in comedy?
Oh man, absolutely. I was a big fan of George Carlin from way back and had a lot of his albums as a little kid. For a young person back in the '70s and '80s, he was maybe not the most "appropriate" person to be listening to as a kid, but my mom, for whatever reason, was like, "Those are bad words, you're not supposed to say them, but that person is an adult." She was just very clear with me on what was appropriate and what wasn't, and why adults could say certain things and kids couldn't. It was an interesting thing. She made sure I understood the difference, and therefore I was able to listen to a lot of stuff that most kids weren't, whether it was George Carlin or Richard Pryor or whoever. I listened to a lot of comedy as a little kid. Mostly I liked that they were telling story. One of my favorite comics—and there's been some revisionist things to say about him—but Bill Cosby's comedy back in the day was about telling stories. Bob Newhart was another comedian that I listened to a lot. It was an early way that I was entertained.
..........
How much do you wish you could be part of the SNL cast during this election cycle?
[Laughs] Well, I don't know, I guess I made somebody mad over there, they don't ask me back anymore. But I do really, really like the show and I'll always watch it obviously because it's part of my DNA, so to speak. It's just what I do when I'm home on a Saturday night. They're going to have fun, it's what makes the show great—the fact that there's this kind of immediacy to it. It's very much a mirror that's held up to reflect what's going on in our world. The fact that it has endured for 40-plus years is just remarkable.
........
Speaking of the comedy scene, I read that you first met Zach Galifianakis when you were starting out as an actor in Los Angeles.
Yeah, Zach's from North Carolina and he went to New York to get his start, and then he came out to L.A. like most comics eventually do to make money. There was a really cool comedy night, Mondays at Largo. It's still there, it's just a different Largo now. It was this tiny, weird little place on Fairfax, and on Monday night was like the hottest room in comedy. There were really, really funny comics there that are now big names: Sarah Silverman, Paul F. Thompkins, Zach, Patton Oswalt—also in the movie with us—Louie C.K., Demetri Martin, Doug Benson, Jimmy Pardo, Scott Ackerman. Tenacious D got its start there. It was just a hot night, a fun night, and it was five dollars. That was the best part of it. It wasn't a super exclusive thing, you just had to know about it. You just had to stand in line, which was a long line and a very small room, or you kind of had to know somebody. I was fortunate enough to know [Mark Flanagan], the guy that owned the place, so I could come in the back door and not have to wait in line, which was even better.
..........
After The Hangover, he's played a lot of different characters to escape stereotyping. Has that been your strategy after playing Don Draper for so long?
I think obviously there's a part in all of us that, whatever you get famous for or known for, people just want to say, "Oh, that's your thing, that's the thing you do." No, that's a thing I do. I'm not defined by this one thing I got famous for. Some people are, and they're fine with it. You can certainly live a happy existence doing the same one thing over and over again. But I feel like the danger is: What happens when everyone gets tired of that? And if you live your life by what the public thinks of you, it becomes a very tricky existence in many ways.
actor Ryan McCartan
Q: Are there any performers that you’re modeling your career on?
A: I don’t like to model myself after anyone. I don’t think I know better than what the cosmos has in store for me. But I like good actors. I’m just watching “The Newsroom” and Jeff Daniels is terrific. Jon Hamm and Bryan Cranston are high on my list.

Gal Gadot
Glamour: You’ve worked with Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Costner, Vin Diesel, Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Tom Cruise, Mark Wahlberg, Jon Hamm, and others. Who would you say is the female version of you?
Gal: I would say Chris Pine!

Glamour: What are some fun things you learned from working with Jon Hamm?
Gal: He’s really good at playing backgammon. And his favorite food is fried chicken!

Glamour: Who would you most trust to babysit your daughter? Who would get her to bed on time?
Gal: A lot of them are good with kids; a lot of them have kids and are good fathers. But my daughter doesn’t like to go to sleep. She’s the best negotiator.
Glamour: Who could best negotiate with her?
Gal: Maybe Jon Hamm. He was a teacher many years ago. He’s really, really good with kids. [My daughter] Alma likes him a lot. I think that he might be able to find his way with her. He’ll do it with fried chicken and M&M’s. [Laughs]

"He knew what he was doing, but nobody relayed this to me," says Fischer. "I just thought, 'Geez, the guy from "Mad Men" is driving fast! Get me out of the car!"
Galifainakis, too, remembers thinking, "Jon is not a stunt driver! Why is he driving the car?!?"

actress Jona Xiao
Who was the funniest on the set?
- While I was on set, I actually was mostly working with Zach and Jon, so I would say maybe Zach wins by a hair. It’s interesting. I was surprised. Jon is very outgoing. He’s the life of the party. He’ll be boisterous in a good way and say funny things. Zach, he’s actually very introverted from what I can tell. He’s more on the quieter side, but the things that come out of his mouth when the camera cuts I just found so funny. He’s just so clever and his mind works a million miles a second, so I think that’s why he wins by a hair.

We had a chance to sit down with the actors at The Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica the following day.  Everyone was really nice and down-to-earth.  I have yet to come across an actor who isn’t just a normal person once the lights are off of them.  It was quite refreshing and Zach and Jon had us laughing the entire time.

Over to you on Jon [Hamm].
Gal GadotJon thought I was the PA when we first met.  This is how it all began, really good, right? We had a table read, and I saw him the first time downstairs.  Usually the director or one of the producers would have introduced us.  But, I saw him, so I just went to introduce myself.  And then he was like very polite.  And he just got off a flight.  And he’s like can I please have some black coffee.
And I said–.

Isla Fisher: –But, you made it, right?
Gal Gadot:  I said–yes, and I spit in it. I said, sure, but you know I’m playing your wife.  I’m Gal. I’m playing Natalie.  And then he felt embarrassed, and he was super sweet about that.  And he apologized, and he was super sweet.
Isla Fisher:  You should have said, “I’m a method actor, and I’m getting into character.”

Cast Try to Answer Questions About Each Other

on Oct 20, was at Plenty Opening Night Celebration

Q: Were people freaking out that you were in Atlanta, going out to dinner and working in town?
Hamm: Atlanta’s had a huge surge in popularity in the movie industry, so people like us, that’s no big deal. I think everybody wants to see Iron Man and Captain America and all the Marvel guys, because they’re all down there. We didn’t have a problem with it. I mean every now and again you’d get a group of drunk girls that would kind of lose their mind a little bit and be a little inappropriate, but whatever. Also, we would eat at like 6 p.m., because we were exhausted and we had to get up at 6 a.m.
Most people are very sweet. It is after all, the South. I think there’s a lot of that, too. Zach has family in Atlanta so I went to his cousin’s house a couple times for dinner, and dinner with his mom and dad that one night at the steak place. We had a very nice time. It was really fun.

Q: What was it like working with Gal Gadot, who plays your wife in this?
Hamm: That was very impressive. Gal, in a similar way, had so much on her plate, and then the prospect of what her next year was going to be and managing that. I was so wildly impressed by her ability to manage all of that, as somebody relatively new to the spotlight. I’d never met her before doing this and I got along with her great, as we all did. A big part of why this movie succeeds is that the central foursome all get along with one another, in the most basic way. If that chemistry isn’t there then I don’t think any of those scenes really work as well as they should. But it is, and they do and it’s good because there are a lot of them. Especially when we were shooting, we spent a lot of time together, all four of us. It was just really nice. It was a good group.

Q: Do you and your co-stars in this still hang out?
Hamm: We had dinner the other night, a big group of us. But some of us live in L.A, some live in New York and some are in Tel Aviv. We all have our own things going on. It’s nice to catch up, and especially nice when there’s little kids involved, because you can see like, “Oh my gosh. Look at that little peanut just turned into a full-grown person.”

Mottola : ........But I always wanted to work with Zach. And then Jon Hamm was the first I thought of for the other role, I recently worked with him on Clear History, an HBO improv movie that we had done together.
.....
I was also gonna say that she plays well with Jon because they look like that super power couple.
Mottola : Yeah, I mean, it’s ridiculous. We wanted that image of people that are ridiculously like another species.
You nailed it.
Mottola : They are like that, yeah.
........
It’s like they’re both superhuman in terms of everything so you look at them and you’re like, “Yeah, forget it.”
Mottola : I think even Jon, the first day Gal was in a scene and she was as tall as Jon was, he was like, “What the fuck is this? It’s ridiculous.”
.........
Talk a little bit about from when you got on the project to what people are seeing on screen how much changed along the way in terms of the story. Because when you cast certain people, you write to their voices and things change.
Mottola : One of the things that wasn’t really in the initial script was the –It’s revealed that the Joneses are, you know, human, but the details were somewhat different. Jon is incredibly good at playing people who have secrets and are hiding aspects of their personality, and obviously Don Draper had a lot of that. We didn’t want to make it a parody of Don Draper but we did arrive on this idea that there’s a side of him that opens up that would like him to stop living as a professional liar. There’s something about this earnest person that just makes him feel kind of dirty about his job and then reminds him that he sort of wants other things out of life and he and his wife haven’t really…He’s brought it up in the past and she hasn’t wanted to really pursue it, and so Jon has this great vulnerability like all these sort of great leading men that have a softness under the hardness that makes them so compelling. And plus, you know, Jon’s too funny for someone who looks like Jon.

Jon Hamm Has Nothing to Do These Days Except Watch Baseball; Somebody Please Hire Jon Hamm
He may be from St. Louis and he’s definitely a lifelong Cardinals fan, but Jon Hamm is down for a Cubs World Series win. And he doesn’t feel like a traitor, either. “It’s exciting to see the Cubs in the World Series now. They’re kind of our traditional rivals, but I don’t have a dog in this fight, so I can certainly give it up for history on that one,” Hamm mused while waiting to celebrate his buddy Tom Ford’s big night at the InStyle Awards at the Getty Center in Los Angeles on Monday night.
......
I’ve got a couple of things happening, I’ve got a few things that are in the can, as it were, and hopefully they will be seen by people when the time comes,” he said, admitting his schedule is basically wide open at the moment.
And until then, I’ll just be kind of cleaning up my house and putting things in order — and watching baseball!” Attention, Jon Hamm's agent: At least throw the guy another cameo.

Here's how to have 41,267 people loathe you with one simple move.
Jon Hamm was one of the fortunate few thousand who were able to secure a ticket to the first World Series game at Wrigley Field in 71 years, but he wasn't there for the Cleveland Indians or the Chicago Cubs.
Instead, the former "Mad Men" actor attended Wrigley donning his St. Louis Cardinals cap, the Cubs' hated division rivals:
There was more to the St. Louis native's troll job, though. The logo on his Cardinals cap is near-identical to the emblem used by the team from 1900-1919, according to SportsLogos.net, a subtle jab at the Cubs' last World Series win in 1908.
Oh, and to rub salt in the Wrigley wound, the Cubs lost Game 3 on Friday, 1-0.

As we talk, children are racing around the diner. Greg Mottola is unperturbed. Lacking any semblance of self-importance or pretension, the filmmaker has created a relaxed atmosphere in Atlanta: he’s brought his own family along on location, encouraging his leading actors to do the same. Galifianakis and Gadot have their spouses and offspring in tow. Fisher has brought along her daughters, Olive, eight, and Elula, six and her (then) four month-old son, Monty. I am introduced to the actress’s husband, the man himself rather than his alter egos. (Baron Cohen invariably conducts his own interviews in character, as Ali G, Borat and Brüno, etc). Jon Hamm doesn’t have children, “but he used to teach and is brilliant with the kids,” says Fisher
