Jon Hamm opens up about playing Mayor Jerry in Hoppers and why the character’s growth hits harder than you’d expect.

..........
Harry Jowsey: I have to ask you, why did you make the decision to switch up the cast? There we go.
Lisa Vanderpump: Because their story was told. Some of them didn’t want to film with each other. I was fed up with talking to their assistants. You know what I mean? It was time, but they were great. I loved them all and I still love them. Some of them aren’t as sweet and nice as they could be, but I do. I love the experience and I feel responsible for dragging them into this domain, so to speak. So, there’s a deep affection for them, but it was now time to go back to the restaurant, back to the nucleus, back to the dynamic that made the show a success in the first place of people working together behind the scenes and what that entails. I remember Jon Hamm coming up to me and he said, and I think he’s iconic. Oh, his penis has its own Instagram, doesn’t it?
Harry Jowsey: Does it?
Lisa Vanderpump: Doesn’t it? There was talk about that. That’s not why I was talking to him. He came up to me and he said, “Lisa, I love your show ‘Vanderpump Rules.’” And he said, “It’s so accurate. It’s like a real restaurant.” I said, “Well, it is a real restaurant, Jon.”
The acting bug
I’ve been acting since I was five. I love it. I’ve always enjoyed the process of creating a character and bringing storytelling to life. I got a scholarship to study acting at the University of Missouri and I’ve been working as a professional since my mid-20s. It’s the one thing that people keep telling me I’m good at, so I continue to do it.

Leading by icon
It’s been cool being a part of the Pixar family. Mayor Jerry is a good guy who gets into tricky situations, but he learns from the consequences of his actions – a quality I wish some of our leaders would exhibit a little more.

Globetrotter
I recorded Hoppers in Calgary, Canada, New York and LA. They find a recording studio wherever you are and do a session there. You can go in your sweatpants and bare feet if you want. It’s a very controlled environment. The directors are usually there in person or online. The session can be 20 minutes or two hours.

In the booth
You want to warm up your voice and make sure you’re not tired or stressed. You have to protect your voice. If you’re screaming for a scene or doing anything super strenuous, you have to be very mindful that you don’t become hoarse.

Camera ready
There’s always a camera running in the recording booth. They film you saying the lines and capture your physicality, particularly how your face is moving. They animate to the person performing the role, so you start to see the actor in the animation. I love that I was able to bring my personality to it.

Set free
It takes years to make an animated movie, with artists working around the clock. Voice work is different to being on set where you’re wearing a costume. This is more in the world of your imagination, and you’re only limited by the crazy story you want to tell. If you can think it up, they’ll draw it. I find it fascinating.

Exclusive: Your Friends & Neighbors Season 2 Breaks All the Rules

James Marsden’s Owen Ashe sees Coop for who he really is. And he’d like to capitalise on that risk.
It's like Coop getting a best friend and a frenemy and a boyfriend and all of these things at once,” Hamm tells Esquire for this exclusive new look at Your Friends & Neighbors’ new season. “It's filling several voids in his life, whether he wants them to be filled or not."
....
Coop doesn’t share the same feeling. “He's back in the thrall of someone he does not want to be in the thrall of,” Hamm says.
.......
You could see the Coop/Ashe storyline as a play on the challenges of making new friends as a grown-up. “Part of it is just the playground that the show sets up,” Hamm says. “This neighbourhood is very small and if you are part of the neighbourhood, then you are part of the friend group whether you want to be or not. That's a big part of a lot of the conflict in the show, these relationships that are certainly not by choice, but by necessity or by proximity.
Overall, Hamm says Coop confronts the same existential questions as most people. He just comes up with unusual (and illegal) answers for them. “What the show is trying to say is actually, ‘Wait, is that all there is?’” he says. “That might be a through-line to a lot of the work that I've done in my career, if you look at Mad Men as well. I think that's why people are responding to the show.”
...........
"We don't ever lose sight of the humor, whether it's intended or unintended, that the show brings us,” Hamm says. “So it was a tremendous thrill to shoot and super fun.” He and Marsden were both paramours of Tina Fey’s Liz Lemon once upon a time, but they have never been onscreen together before. “Jimmy is such a great guy and I‘ve wanted to work with him forever,” Hamm says. “We missed each other on 30 Rock, but we've definitely made up for it on this.”
..................
It’s a cautionary tale, but one with a dark sense of humor. “The overriding tone of the show is escapist, playing with this idea of this overprivileged, incredibly rich people behaving badly,” Hamm says, “which we seem to be stuck with in the 21st century America of now.”

Mr Hamm in a.... bankable project
Pixar looks to have an original hit on its hands as Hoppers easily stayed No. 1 at the domestic box office, declining a narrow 37 percent to $28.5 million in its second outing. The news was also good overseas, where it gathered up another $31 million for an early foreign total of $77.5 million and $164.7 globally to become the top-grossing animated film of the year so far.......
...........
Last weekend, Hoppers delivered a key win for the Disney-owned Pixar with a domestic opening of $46 million and $88 million globally, the biggest launch for any Hollywood original animated title since Pixar’s Coco nearly a decade ago in 2017.

LBB> Which commercial projects are you proudest of and why?
Matthew> I really love the World Cup Santa Claus spot with Jon Hamm sitting by the pool. First of all, Jon Hamm is a delight and gives so much gold it can be overwhelming – you just want to use everything. And it won an Emmy! Well… a Sports Emmy, but still. The statue looks just as good (and costs just as much… sheesh… the box it arrived in is nicer than my luggage). Many thanks to the Academy; it was an honour just to be nominated!

Life Lessons With Jon Hamm

Jon Hamm is reflecting on what it’s like to be famous. On what it’s like to be Jon Hamm. “Everyone that goes through it goes crazy,” he says,.....
“It’s just about how you handle your crazy,” he says, taking a sip of his Diet Coke. “There’s a fallout that happens when you go through it, and some people don’t survive it.”......
“You learn to understand that a lot of it is ephemeral,” he says in between mouthfuls of tuna salad.
“A lot of it is a moment in time that won’t happen again. Or it might happen again and you’ll get lucky and lightning might strike twice… You never know,” he says. “I’ve been very fortunate to be consistent with my output and to like what I do.”
“I didn’t know those people at all when we started,” Hamm says, poking at the remnants of his salad. “Only John Slattery a little bit. It was incredibly fortunate how it all turned out; we were all best friends for 10 years. The show was what it was, and we were all happy to be part of it, we all built careers out of it. Sometimes it works out.”
Here we go :
“I’m part of a weird and small club of people who lost their parents very young,” Hamm says. “So, there’s also the added ‘joy’ of not having the traditional element of leadership or help growing up and having to navigate all of that relatively alone.
I’ve always been a little bit outside my friend group,” he adds. “My first set of friends got married at 23, right out of college, while I was single until I was in my late twenties. They were all making money in the 1990s and I was waiting tables, poor as fuck. When I became successful, they were all getting laid off, so I’ve always been slightly on the other side of things.”

“After you get the job, you have to do the job,” he says. “I say it to friends of mine and other actors. It goes under the category of ‘be careful what you wish for’, but if it’s a success, make sure it’s something you want to do. You might be doing it for a long time and if you fucking hate it or find it unfulfilling in some way, it’s going to show. There’s nothing worse than watching something when you can tell they’re only in it for the paycheque.
One of the greatest examples of it for me was being on set with Tom Cruise,” he continues. “He works at an incredibly high level and has a huge amount of control over what he does. But there are a lot of guys in that position who take it for granted, and he does not.
“He is 100 per cent committed to every moment that he is on stage. He knows that without him, a $500m production, none of it happens, so he’s 100 per cent all the time and it’s infectious. That’s how I try to be when I’m number one on the call sheet. I certainly did it as Don Draper.”

It’s like my pub,” he says fondly. “You have a bite to eat, some friends come by, then they’d leave, some more friends would drop in, you could stay for four hours, meet seven different groups. It’s a neighbourhood spot.”

He pulls out his phone and shows me a photo of him and Warren Beatty, sat in this very booth. He shakes his head in slight disbelief at the memory. “Bananas.

At 55, Hamm now splits his time between LA and New York with his wife, the actress Anna Osceola. “Being employed in New York is way better than being unemployed in New York,” he says. “All my SNL friends are there, I’ve got a good group of people. It’s a fun place to be. Dinners, plays, shows, especially in the summer. It’s a fun way to recharge and live life. Sometimes, you look up and go, ‘Oh fuck! I’ve been working for five years straight’.”

Hamm pulls out his phone again and shows me another photo of him, this time with Paul McCartney on a boat, another shake of the head in faint disbelief, and then an impression of McCartney’s transatlantic-meets-scouse drawl. “Jon, shall we get a picture?”

We talk about Blur vs Oasis, Springsteen’s fallow years and the White Album. “I still can’t believe how young they were,” he says. “Practically kids.”

He says he hates going to the dentist and loves sitting at the bar during dinner, striking up a conversation with the stranger next to him. Then another photo, this time of his rescue dog, Murphy, whom he likes to take on ambling walks on LA’s trails when he’s away from set.
“I’ve been the beneficiary of a lot of luck,” Hamm says, whipping out a wad of cash and paying the bill before I have time to mount a protest. “I think the buzzword of the moment is ‘blessed’. It reminds me that all of these things are circular, all of it passes.

“I’m often asked about what’s next. What’s next? I’ll know it when I see it.
“What’s next? Dinner!”

Speaking of doing all right, in the first six and a half minutes of season 2, we see your butt," Andy Cohen mentioned, before cohost John Hill asked, "Do you have a butt double?"
Hamm said he doesn't have one, confirming that it's his "real butt."
Cohen and Hill then asked if Hamm prepares his body for any scene that could include his derrière, or if he thinks about his butt being seen. Hill wondered what happens if there's a zit present. "Well, if I do, that gets fixed in post. Come on," Hamm chided. But can it get plumped in post? "That, I don't know," the actor admitted.
Cohen seemed mesmerized by Hamm's confessions. "So, you did no extra squats? You don't even remember this happened?" The radio host lamented missing the Your Friends & Neighbors premiere event where he would see Hamm's butt "larger than life."
Season 3 is already written to that point?” Andy asked.
Hamm replied, “Buddy, we’re gonna start shooting [Season 3] in, like, a month … It’s in the works. It’s very fun and exciting, the third season, but the second season is a wonderful ride.”
