And Friday night filmmaker/visual artist Arthur Jafa and his family were on hand at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA for the opening night party for his brilliant short film “Love is the Message, the Message is Death.” The film is a poetic, infuriating, inspired and moving meditation on black life, death, resistance, cultural production, and all the big existential questions, all packed into a dense, hypnotic seven and a half minutes. Among those attending the party were visual artists Henry Taylor, Ben Caldwell, Lisa Soto, and Charles Gaines; filmmakers Numa Perrier, Kahlil Joseph, and Tchaiko Omawale; scholars Suné Woods, Darrell Moore, Tisa Bryant, Keith M. I don't think that he was "too big" as Draper to move on to a film career. Clooney was a much bigger deal on ER than Hamm was as Don Draper.
He might not have the screen presence that directors are looking for. Or he may be so dead set on being in comedies that he's passing on films that don't excite him.

Jon Hamm had to wait until very late in his career to achieve any sort of notoriety. Don Draper WAS "his wave," and I promise you he didn't miss it.

There’s a story about making “Angie Tribeca” that’s stuck with me. When Jon Hamm signed on for a guest role in the Season 2 premiere, he knew what he was in for: one scene, one line, three words. His character walked into a room, said “See you around,” and left. That’s it. That’s all he had to do. So…easy gig, right?
Not exactly.
“They brought him in at 7 a.m., and just before lunch, we rehearsed with him,” co-star Jere Burns said at a PaleyFest screening last April. “He just sat in his little trailer until we rehearsed. Then, after we rehearsed, we broke for lunch. We didn’t shoot him until after lunch. He could not have been nicer. Most actors, no matter who you are, you’re like, ‘This is so annoying. I have three words. I’ve been waiting around for seven hours.’ He could not have been more pleasant.”
But that was the joke, and everyone knew it. The writers knew it, Hamm knew it, and everyone on “Angie Tribeca” knows it during every moment of their brilliant spoof on cop shows. It’s so ridiculous, so unexpected, and so stupid it’s hysterical.

Jon Hamm, when he came in — he was only in his mid-thirties then, and he came in unshaven and scruffy. He looked like a young guy who’d just come from a Hollywood nightclub, having had cocktails with friends. I was like, 'Oh my God, I'm totally screwed, he doesn't look like Don Draper!' And then he went into makeup and hair and he came out like it was 1961.
His people said, 'Look, he'll smoke for your pictures, because that's what Don does, but don't make him do it more than he has to.' I replied, 'Yes, of course, we'll keep it to a minimum.' So, at one point we decided to take a break, and Jon went outside to have a smoke — perfect!"

Some of the most well-known actors that I’ve been so fortunate to work with have also been some of the most down-to-earth and humble and supportive.....
When I worked with Jon Hamm in Keeping Up with the Joneses, we connected about St. Louis since we both lived there for many years and I ended up helping him with his Mandarin since his character speaks some dialogue in Mandarin throughout the film. We ended up taking a selfie together on the last day of filming and he was so gracious.

That nerdy affect seems intended to heighten contrasts between Josh and the chiseled Craig, a heartthrob from the cast of a series called South Street Law. Let’s just say that Quinto’s role requires more acting than Hamm’s does. It will remind audiences of how hard it is for a hyper-recognisable star to play new characters.

Quinto: That’s one of my favorite aspects of producing, because I have a lot of relationships and I’m kind of able to bring them to bear. That was something where we were very fortunate on this film. Jenny was really the first person in this iteration of the film that we talked about and reached out to. I’m so grateful that she responded with such a thoughtful, kind, and considerate response to the script, and she came on board right away. That’s based on my friendship with Jenny, and it was the same thing with Jon. I just sent those guys the script. I said, “Hey, guys, I’m making this movie, and I’d love to have you along on this journey.” They both came with a lot of enthusiasm and preparation.

Brian, you were an actor before becoming a filmmaker. Did that affect your approach?
Shoaf: I think it absolutely does. When everything’s happening for the first time, it’s hard to know what your style is. It’s hard to say “I do this” or “I don’t do this” because I wanted to stay as open-minded as possible, and be ready for what each day would bring.............
but Jenny comes from a very, very different place. But, I felt like I could see how it was she wanted to approach this and would be most comfortable. And then Jon is a consummate pro. He can walk right in and go, “Where do you need me? What do you want me to do?” and then once he has that, he finds a lot of depth, but does it kind of more independently. And so, it was very interesting.

Funny Kurt Russell story. A few years ago my wife and I were hanging out on a Saturday having some drinks. OK, maybe more than some. But somehow Jon Hamm came up and she started gushing about how much she loved him. This kinda caught me by surprise.

Jon Hamm’s performance was good, yet predictable – a role where his good looks help him bed a woman his character is taken with (sounding a lot like Mad Men to you too?). His most shining moment is towards the end of the film, when his character has a moment of self-exposure – giving Hamm a chance to stretch his acting skills.
