Funny or Die at 10: An Oral History of a Comedy Juggernaut
JON HAMM (Mad Men, early Funny or Die star)There was so much weird shit out there, and you felt like you had to know somebody or have a cool in somewhere to know what videos were worth your time. The idea that something would survive on its own merit was kind of interesting.
.......
JON HAMM
There was no upside to doing it back then—it’s not like your manager was saying, “Oh, you should get on Funny or Die.” I think that actually exists now, where you can see people on there that are trying to boost their cred in some way.

Comic veteran Mark Waid at Wondercon
Asked if he had a fan-cast in mind for Plutonian, Waid quickly named Jon Hamm before saying “but we’ll never get him.”

Hamm was at the : MOCA's Leadership Circle and Members' Opening of "Carl Andre: Sculpture as Place, 1958-2010" and "Arthur Jafa: Love Is The Message, The Message Is Death"....April 1
And Friday night filmmaker/visual artist Arthur Jafa and his family were on hand at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA for the opening night party for his brilliant short film “Love is the Message, the Message is Death.” The film is a poetic, infuriating, inspired and moving meditation on black life, death, resistance, cultural production, and all the big existential questions, all packed into a dense, hypnotic seven and a half minutes. Among those attending the party were visual artists Henry Taylor, Ben Caldwell, Lisa Soto, and Charles Gaines; filmmakers Numa Perrier, Kahlil Joseph, and Tchaiko Omawale; scholars SunĂ© Woods, Darrell Moore, Tisa Bryant, Keith M. Harris, and Shana Redmond; and Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, poet/activist Saul Williams, Grey’s Anatomy actor Jesse Williams, and Black-ish actress Yara Shahidi.

From a forum :
I'm looking at his projects since Mad Men and upcoming projects and its pretty ho-hum. After The Town I thought he had a shot to transition but now i have my doubts.
Will he ever make the jump?
..................................
He'll never be a big time movie star. Might get another good tv role though
.......................
When you're so closely identified with one role, it might be tough to do a lot besides voice work, of which he's doing plenty.
Plus there was that run on Children's Hospital!
......................
I don't think that he was "too big" as Draper to move on to a film career. Clooney was a much bigger deal on ER than Hamm was as Don Draper.
He might not have the screen presence that directors are looking for. Or he may be so dead set on being in comedies that he's passing on films that don't excite him.
He's done a shit-ton of small comedic roles. The guy says yes to any comedy that will have him (it seems).
.....................
Yeah you just can't get away from Don Draper
That role was also just perfectly fitted for his looks and I don't think he's an objectively good or great actor. And I'm a huge MM fan
........................
Maybe he likes what he is doing, and is trying to distance himself from the Don Draper role. He could probably have more higher profile roles than what he's taken, but maybe he doesnt want them.
.......................
The guy was humping it working small roles and waiting tables into his 30s.
I bet hes just having fun and enjoying life.
......................
He's too busy bathing in that sweet voice over money from Mercedes.
....................
Jon Hamm had to wait until very late in his career to achieve any sort of notoriety. Don Draper WAS "his wave," and I promise you he didn't miss it.
.......................
One odd thing about Hammy I've noticed is chicks ruining their panties when watching Mad Men, yet hardly seem to notice him when they see him in other things. I'm not sure I've ever seen that dynamic before.
It's because deep down women want a guy like Don Draper, warts and all.
They don't want Jon Hamm...who by the way, never seems all that cool in other roles. Like Brad Pitt and George Clooney were still kinda cool in different roles.
Hamm comes off sort of goofy in other roles. It's really strange.
He's like the two-face girlfriend in Seinfeld. In Mad Men he looks like a mega-star; in other roles he looks like a guy just happy to be there.

There’s a story about making “Angie Tribeca” that’s stuck with me. When Jon Hamm signed on for a guest role in the Season 2 premiere, he knew what he was in for: one scene, one line, three words. His character walked into a room, said “See you around,” and left. That’s it. That’s all he had to do. So…easy gig, right?
Not exactly.
“They brought him in at 7 a.m., and just before lunch, we rehearsed with him,” co-star Jere Burns said at a PaleyFest screening last April. “He just sat in his little trailer until we rehearsed. Then, after we rehearsed, we broke for lunch. We didn’t shoot him until after lunch. He could not have been nicer. Most actors, no matter who you are, you’re like, ‘This is so annoying. I have three words. I’ve been waiting around for seven hours.’ He could not have been more pleasant.”
But that was the joke, and everyone knew it. The writers knew it, Hamm knew it, and everyone on “Angie Tribeca” knows it during every moment of their brilliant spoof on cop shows. It’s so ridiculous, so unexpected, and so stupid it’s hysterical.

photographer Chris Buck behind-the-scenes stories from his latest book
"This was for a story about AMC doing original drama programming. 'Breaking Bad' was not out yet, and the network sent me a DVD of it to watch on the flight to Los Angeles. I was totally hooked — it was like watching an underground movie; so dark and weird.
Bryan Cranston I knew from 'Malcolm in The Middle.....
Jon Hamm, when he came in — he was only in his mid-thirties then, and he came in unshaven and scruffy. He looked like a young guy who’d just come from a Hollywood nightclub, having had cocktails with friends. I was like, 'Oh my God, I'm totally screwed, he doesn't look like Don Draper!' And then he went into makeup and hair and he came out like it was 1961.
His people said, 'Look, he'll smoke for your pictures, because that's what Don does, but don't make him do it more than he has to.' I replied, 'Yes, of course, we'll keep it to a minimum.' So, at one point we decided to take a break, and Jon went outside to have a smoke — perfect!"

You’ve worked with some really big-hitters in the industry in the past year or so; do you try to get some advice from these particular actors or are there specific things you have taken away from being on set with such individuals?
Some of the most well-known actors that I’ve been so fortunate to work with have also been some of the most down-to-earth and humble and supportive.
....
When I worked with Jon Hamm in Keeping Up with the Joneses, we connected about St. Louis since we both lived there for many years and I ended up helping him with his Mandarin since his character speaks some dialogue in Mandarin throughout the film.
We ended up taking a selfie together on the last day of filming and he was so gracious.

Jon Hamm Snags Renovated House
A freshly renovated and expanded residence behind gates near the end of a discreet cul-de-sac in a notably celeb-favored neighborhood in L.A.’s Los Feliz area sold, per property records, to an inscrutable trust for a bit below $3.4 million, and celebrity-real-estate snitch Lucy Spillerguts says she’s “110% certain” the new owner is recently rehabbed “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm. With four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms in about 3,600 square feet, the two-story residence merges a modern design aesthetic with rugged but refined organic materials such as horizontal wood cladding wrapped around the entire lower floor.

Quinto, who had long been friends with Jon Hamm and Jenny Slate, brought them both to the project.
"That's one of my favorite aspects of producing, actually, and creating work, whether I'm a part of it as an actor or not. Bringing my relationships to bear in involving other actors and involving people who I've admired and whose friendship I've valued for years is a really great aspect of having a production company and being able to pull projects together," Quinto says. "Jenny is the first person that we reached out to for that role. Jon is someone who I think brings a certain ease and magnetism to his work and, in terms of the brother aspect, is someone that I felt fits that very well."

about actor Armie Hammer
....The best-case comparison for Hammer’s future may be Jon Hamm, an actor capable of both drama and comedy who looks too perfect to get his hands dirty but isn’t. In drama, their common tack could be playing a man with everything but goodness and fulfillment. And in comedy, Hammer could thrive doing something akin to Hamm’s recurring role on 30 Rock, someone too handsome to know he’s a fool. Hammer is already a willing and charming late night talk show guest, where his easy rapport with any host and his vocal register are also reminiscent of Hamm’s. He’s not only mastered that endearing promotional note of “Isn’t celebrity culture ridiculous but fun?” but also dances quite unabashedly for a giant.....

Elisabeth Moss
Moss, who is number one on the call sheet of the Hulu drama, has bought donuts for the cast and crew in an effort to lift spirits on this chilly Monday.
“
I learned from Jon [Hamm] on ‘Mad Men’ that you do have a responsibility as number one to not only be professional, but to be as positive as you can,” Moss says. Hence the treats for the crew, most of whom had also worked all day Sunday

If Josh played by Quinto is the shyly awkward aardvark child, his hair and an oddly-striped sweater seem drawn from somewhere else, the signature whacky world of Jim Carrey’s crazy days. That nerdy affect seems intended to heighten contrasts between Josh and the chiseled Craig, a heartthrob from the cast of a series called South Street Law. Let’s just say that Quinto’s role requires more acting than Hamm’s does. It will remind audiences of how hard it is for a hyper-recognisable star to play new characters.

Hamm, Jenny Slate, Sam Jones at the AT&T Audience Network's Off camera with Sam Jones, 100th Ă©pisodes celebration at the Palaey Center...Beverly Hills
Can you tell me about casting Jenny Slate, Jon Hamm, and Sheila Vand?
Quinto: That’s one of my favorite aspects of producing, because I have a lot of relationships and I’m kind of able to bring them to bear. That was something where we were very fortunate on this film. Jenny was really the first person in this iteration of the film that we talked about and reached out to. I’m so grateful that she responded with such a thoughtful, kind, and considerate response to the script, and she came on board right away. That’s based on my friendship with Jenny, and it was the same thing with Jon. I just sent those guys the script. I said, “Hey, guys, I’m making this movie, and I’d love to have you along on this journey.” They both came with a lot of enthusiasm and preparation.
........................
Brian, you were an actor before becoming a filmmaker. Did that affect your approach?
Shoaf: I think it absolutely does. When everything’s happening for the first time, it’s hard to know what your style is. It’s hard to say “I do this” or “I don’t do this” because I wanted to stay as open-minded as possible, and be ready for what each day would bring.............
but Jenny comes from a very, very different place. But, I felt like I could see how it was she wanted to approach this and would be most comfortable. And then Jon is a consummate pro. He can walk right in and go, “Where do you need me? What do you want me to do?” and then once he has that, he finds a lot of depth, but does it kind of more independently. And so, it was very interesting.
Q: Kurt Russell has agreed to hang out with you for one afternoon. What are you and Kurt gonna do? – Josh
Oh, man. Bull and I hitting the town? Snake Plissken and myself grabbing some wings? Having a beer with Mr. Nobody?! I think my biggest goal would be not embarrassing myself. I am not sure if I could even have fun because I would be like Smalls in the first half-hour of
The Sandlot the entire time. “Don’t be a goofus. Don’t be a goofus.”
.........................
Funny Kurt Russell story. A few years ago my wife and I were hanging out on a Saturday having some drinks. OK, maybe more than some
. But somehow Jon Hamm came up and she started gushing about how much she loved him. This kinda caught me by surprise.
Me: “Really? Women like Jon Hamm? I had no idea he was a sex symbol.”
Heather: “Women love Jon Hamm. He is so sexy.”
Me: “Seriously? I mean, I guess. But he is no Kurt Russell.”

Zachary Quinto and Jenny Slate deliver stellar performances, each working off the other to elevate the believability of each other’s characters....
My only true complaint with casting was with regards to Jon Hamm. Jon Hamm’s performance was good, yet predictable – a role where his good looks help him bed a woman his character is taken with (sounding a lot like Mad Men to you too?).
His most shining moment is towards the end of the film, when his character has a moment of self-exposure – giving Hamm a chance to stretch his acting skills.
