Jon Hamm on Imitating Will Arnett's Voice on Grimsburg: 'I Probably Owe Him Royalties at This Point'

Hamm tells PEOPLE that several elements went into finding the voice of the detective, who has a beer belly and mustache, explaining, "Part of it was understanding that he was going to look like that. Part of it was understanding that he's probably not getting a lot of sleep, and part of it was trying to find something that sounded pretty funny, and the biggest part of it was I just always, whenever I'm asked to do a voice, I just imitate Will Arnett.”

That takes care of most of the decision making

“There's a funny thing about Will, who once you hear his voice, you can't not hear his voice, and he'll say the same thing,” Hamm says of Arnett, 53. “He's been working in the voiceover and animation world forever, and I love how his voice sounds, and I probably owe him royalties at this point, but he's the number one guy for me. I think his voice is just super resonant.”

“The funny thing about Will is that he's trying to do an impression of me and it just sounds like him,” he jokingly adds.

Hamm is also slated to reunite with his Mad Men costar Christina Hendricks, who will guest star on the first season of Grimsburg.

“Christina also has one of those amazing voices as well,” Hamm, who also serves as an executive producer on the series, says. “It just happens to be packaged in the package that she also brings to it, but her voice is amazing.”

“I think she's done quite a bit of work in this space, so it was a great pleasure for her to say yes, honestly. I called her and said, ‘Would you consider doing this? And it might be fun and funny for people to hear that,’ and it has been so far.”

“Sharp eared viewers might hear some other people maybe from the Mad Men universe. Keep tuned in.”

"It's exciting, you know, it's very nice. We had our six-month anniversary on Christmas Eve, so that was sort of nice. It makes it easier to remember.

There was a lot going on, it was Christmas Eve.

I forgot I did all this actually, it was one of those things, you know? We shot it all last year and it had to come out at some point so now it's all coming out, but I'm very excited to see it," he added. "I haven't seen [Mean Girls] yet so, very excited to see it!"

The program and dinner opened with a reading of Dr. Seuss’ Oh The Places You’ll Go from Shanola Hampton, spearheading the night’s theme wherein others—Jon Hamm, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Patton Oswalt, Jason Siegel, and more—took the stage to recite words from passages they were inspired by. Presented by Howell, Amy Smart, and TV Host Carter Oosterhouse were also honored with the Spirit of Elysium Award, alongside Cara Santana, who was meant to receive the award in 2021.
